The D-3 visa (기술연수 — technical training) is for foreign workers who come to Korea to receive on-the-job technical training at a Korean industrial company. It is strictly tied to an existing business relationship: the trainee must be an employee of an overseas subsidiary or joint venture of the Korean company, or work for a foreign firm that has licensed Korean technology or imported Korean-made industrial plant worth the statutory minimum threshold. The D-3 is not a general skills-training visa — it is a company-to-company knowledge-transfer instrument. All D-3 visas must be sponsored through a 사증발급인정서.
Production-line workers employed by a company that is an overseas subsidiary or joint venture of a Korean industrial firm, or a foreign firm that has imported Korean technology (USD $100,000+ technology license) or industrial plant (USD $500,000+). Must be personally unable to acquire the required technical skills in their home country.
Employed by the overseas subsidiary/joint-venture or partner firm that qualifies the host Korean company for the D-3 programme
Korean host company has a qualifying relationship: overseas direct investment under 외국환거래법, technology export contract of USD $100,000+, or plant export of USD $500,000+ under 대외무역법
Training is necessary because the technology cannot be taught outside Korea
Host Korean company must be a registered industrial establishment (기술연수업체)
Trainee is a production-level worker, not a manager or admin
Korean-language ability documentation may be required
Valid passport + visa application form + passport photo
사증발급인정서 (Certificate of Visa Issuance) — mandatory for all D-3 applications
Home company's registration certificate or establishment certificate
Letter of employment from home company confirming the trainee's production-staff role
Proof of qualifying business relationship (overseas investment registration, technology-export contract, or plant-export documents)
Korean-language proficiency documents (if required)
Korean company confirms D-3 eligibility
The Korean host company (기술연수업체) verifies that it has a qualifying investment, technology-export, or plant-export relationship with the overseas firm employing you.
Korean company applies for 사증발급인정서
The host company applies to the regional immigration office for a 사증발급인정서. The application must include proof of the qualifying business relationship and of your employment at the overseas partner firm.
Apply at the Korean consulate
Submit your D-3 visa application at the Korean embassy or consulate with the 사증발급인정서 and supporting documents.
Undergo training and register
On arrival, register at the local immigration office within 90 days. You may only perform the training activities as specified in the invitation — no separate employment.
