For many visa holders in Korea, this is the single most dangerous procedural mistake. People assume that once the extension is filed, they are free to travel and simply return later. In reality, departure during a pending stay application can break the case. Unless immigration confirms otherwise for your exact filing, you should treat overseas travel during a pending extension as high risk.

The stay manual states that stay-permission applications are intended to be processed while the foreign national is physically in Korea. If you leave after filing, immigration may refuse the case, treat it as withdrawn, or require a different route on re-entry. This is not just a technicality — it affects real cases every year.
Many applicants confuse lawful stay while pending with travel freedom while pending. Those are not the same. Filing before expiry may protect you from overstay inside Korea, but it does not automatically preserve the application if you depart the country. Your re-entry eligibility, status, and pending extension are separate issues.
If there is a family emergency, urgent business trip, or embassy appointment abroad, contact immigration or a licensed 행정사 before leaving. Ask specifically what will happen to the pending extension if you depart, whether you must withdraw and refile later, and whether your re-entry will require a new visa or consular step. Do not rely on general advice from friends, HR, or online forums for this issue.
If you already know you must travel, delay the extension filing until you have a plan confirmed with immigration.
Keep screenshots of your HiKorea filing and any communication with immigration about travel permission.
If your employer booked work travel for you, make sure they understand the immigration risk before you board the flight.

Will my application definitely be cancelled if I leave?
Not every case ends the same way, but the risk is high enough that you should not travel unless immigration confirms the effect on your specific filing. Assume departure can damage the application.
What if I already left Korea?
You need case-specific advice immediately. Check whether the application is still active, whether it was treated as withdrawn, and whether you now need consular processing or a new filing route.
Does this apply only to extensions?
No. Similar caution applies to other in-country stay-permission cases, including some status changes. Any filing that assumes you are staying in Korea while it is processed deserves the same warning.
