Study & Integration
Definition
TOPIK (한국어능력시험) is the official Korean language proficiency test, used by Korean universities for admission, by employers for hiring, and by the immigration authorities to assess Korean language ability for points-based visa applications.
TOPIK is administered by the National Institute for International Education (NIIED) under Korea's Ministry of Education. It has two levels: TOPIK I (beginners, levels 1–2) and TOPIK II (intermediate to advanced, levels 3–6). Level 5 or 6 is required for admission to Korean graduate programs taught in Korean, and some employers specify minimum TOPIK scores for local hires. For immigration purposes, TOPIK scores feed directly into the F-2-7 points-based residency system: a TOPIK Level 3 earns a set number of points, while Level 4, 5, and 6 earn progressively more. TOPIK is offered 4–6 times per year in Korea and at test centers worldwide. Scores are valid for 2 years.
For long-term foreign residents in Korea, improving your TOPIK score is one of the most strategic immigration investments — it boosts your F-2-7 point total, opens more employment options, and demonstrates integration. It's also one of the few immigration-relevant achievements that is entirely within your own control to improve over time, independent of your employer or sponsoring institution.
