Visa Process
Definition
A status of sojourn change allows a foreigner already in South Korea to switch from one visa category to another without leaving the country — for example, from a D-2 student visa to an E-7 skilled worker visa upon graduation and employment.
Under Korean immigration law, your 'sojourn status' (체류자격) determines what activities you are legally permitted to perform in Korea. A status change (체류자격 변경허가) lets you switch categories while remaining in Korea. Common transitions include: D-2 (student) → E-7 (skilled worker), D-10 (job-seeker) → E-4/E-7 (professional/specialist), F-2 (residency) → F-5 (permanent resident), and tourist/visa-exempt → D-4 (language study). Not all transitions are permitted — for example, you generally cannot change from a short-term tourism status directly to a work visa. Applications are filed at an immigration office or via HiKorea and require proof that you qualify for the new category. Processing takes 2–8 weeks depending on complexity. You receive a new ARC showing the updated status.
A status change is almost always preferable to leaving Korea and reapplying from abroad when circumstances change — it saves travel costs and preserves your residency timeline. However, timing is critical: you must apply before your current status expires and cannot work under the new status until the change is approved. An immigration consultant can advise whether a status change is available for your situation and prepare the application.
